Rare Derby figure of Saint Thomas, represented as a barefoot man in Roman dress, a yellow lined turquoise cloak and a flower decorated purple robe, a broken orb and sword at his feet representing the lack of Roman law in his manner of death, on a circular base decorated with rococo scrolls. Circa 1756 |
Originally a dry-edge period figure from 1755, this example is from a few years later, from the pale family period C. 1756-9. The finger has a firing flaw, and there is a section of the cloak rim damaged in the firing; perhaps because of this, the figure was sold to an outside decorator, who decorated it in luxury colours, rather than the saintly tones expected for such a religious figure. Bradshaw explains the situation in Derby Porcelain Figures p63; apparently such colourful figures were once identified as King Lear, but a set of pottery versions with original labels show their intended identity. The bright colours therefore show the painters unfamiliarity with the intended subject, hence the conclusion of an outside decorator at work. Religious figures in any early English factory are unusual, and cannot have been popular sellers; perhaps the un-sainting of a figure such as this was intentional, in order to sell an otherwise slow mover . ref. Bradshaw Derby Porcelain Figures D31 & D32 (also B28 & 29) for illustrations & p29 for a write-up on these interesting figure types. |

Documentary Minton charger, painted by J.D. Rochfort with a mother and children in a garden, two swans to one side and a bullfinch in a tree. Signed & dated Janurary 23rd, 1872. |
An inscription to the reverse quotes a verse from the Unpublished + unfinished poems by Hugh Mc Minton . The artist Rochfort is listed as an amateur, and was associated with the Minton Art Pottery Studio, set up for amateurs such as himself to learn and paint high class pottery . The studio began in 1871 in a specially built studio next to the Royal Albert Hall, South Kensington, London. This was an ideal location, being close to the new South Kensington Museum, later to be called the Victoria & Albert, and regarded as being the world s finest collection of decorative arts, thus providing endless sources of inspiration to the amateur artists. The manager of the Minton Art Pottery Studio was a member of the Minton family, Hugh McNeile Minton, who was also, according to this charger, an an amateur poet. Rochfort must have been impressed by his manager s poetry - and hopefully Hugh Minton was as impressed by Rochfort s painting! Provenance: Zetlin collection, US |

The family was originally based in a large castle in Maynooth in County Kildare. In later centuries the family owned estates in Waterford with country residence being a Georgian house called Carton House which had replaced the castle in County Kildare. In Dublin, the Earl built a large townhouse residence on the south side of Dublin called Kildare House. When the Earl was awarded a dukedom and became Duke of Leinster, the house was renamed Leinster House. One of its occupants was Lord Edward FitzGerald, who became an icon for Irish nationalism through his involvement with the Irish Rebellion of 1798, which ultimately cost him his life. Leinster House was sold by the Leinsters in the early nineteenth century. After nearly a century as the headquarters of the Royal Dublin Society, which held its famed Spring Show and Horse Show in its grounds, Oireachtas Éireann, the two chamber parliament of the new Irish Free State, rented Leinster House in 1922 to be its temporary parliament house. In 1924 it bought the building for parliamentary use. It has remained the parliament house of the Irish Free State (now called the Republic of Ireland). The Dukes of Leinster had by the early 20th century lost all their property and wealth. Their Carton House seat was sold (though one of Ireland's most historic buildings with perfectly preserved 18th century grounds, it was controversially turned into a hotel and golf course in the late 1990s by the current owner in an act condemned by environmentalists), as later on was their other residence in Waterford. Francis Cotes, R.A. Portrait of Alice Blair Gaft Johnston, shown in quarter length with a blue silk dress and golden shawl, a gold silk bow with pendant string of pearls trailing around her waist, a further golden bow on her sleeve. Pastel on canvas, Signed & dated mid left FC / 1751 in a period 18th century carved foliate frame (probably original) |
Provenance: estate of Foy Casper (1939-2003, chief art conservator Chrysler Museum USA) Francis Cotes (1726-1770) began as a miniature painter, and soon came to be a prominent portrait painter amongst the aristocracy of England. He vied with the likes of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) to become the most sought-after professional portrait painter of his generation. He tragically died in 1770 after drinking a toxic concoction intended to dissolve his troublesome gall stones. He is represented in major collections around the world, such as the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Tate, London. The Tate s Portrait of a Lady (1768) has the same signature FC monogram as this work, and the 1768 date coincides with his part in the founding of the Royal Academy in that year. |

This rather feminine looking figure is sometimes refered to as Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth; but as this figure is grouped with Neptune (water), Ceres (earth) and Juno (air), he is undoubtedly Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, and often associated with the phoenix bird which re-generated in the fire. ref. Rare Derby religious figure of the Apostle Saint Philip, represented as a barefoot man in long flowing cloak, an ermine- lined purple cloak and a flower decorated undershirt, a basket of purple bread spilling out to one side, on a circular base decorated with rococo scrolls. Circa 1756 |
Saint Thomas was one of the twelve apostles, and the basket at his feet represents the miracle of the loaves & fishes. Originally a dry-edge period figure from 1755, this example is from a few years later, from the pale family period C. 1756-9. The fingers probably had a firing flaw, and there is a section of the cloak rim damaged in the firing; perhaps because of this, the figure was sold to an outside decorator, who decorated it in luxury colours, rather than the saintly tones expected for such a religious figure. |
